A social security number is one of the most important number you could have. This number not only identities you to the government for tax and social security payment purposes, but it is also used for credit purposes. Without a social security number, it would be very difficult or even impossible to apply for loans, credit cards, and bank accounts.
At some point or another, you may lose your social security card. Losing your social security card is not so detrimental if you still remember your social security number.
If you lost your social security card, you can easily get a replacement for free. It is good to have a social security card since you never know when you may be asked for it.
You are allowed to get 10 social security card replacements in your life. Also you are allowed at most 3 replacements per year. When you get your card, do not carry your card around with you. Put it in a safe place.
If someone stole your wallet or purse with your social security card in it, it could be damaging to your credit report. The criminal could use your social security number to apply for credit cards and destroy your credit rating.
Replacing your social security card requires documentation proving that you are who you say you are. You can use your passport, certificate of naturalization, driver?s license, or work permit as proper documentation requirements. The documents should be the original or have the issuing agency give you a certified copy.
When you have gotten the right documents, go and get an application for a social security card, which is also called the SS-5 form. Fill out this form and send it along with your documents to a social security office. You can also take the form and documents to the office personally.
Once the office has processed your application they will return the documents to you. They would then give you replacement social security card later on.
